While teaching Professional Development this module, the class discussion eventually led to dressing professionally at work. Students commented on how regardless if it was business casual or not, it was expensive to dress well. Then it dawned upon me that a field trip to a quality consignment shop would help students to discover how to dress with style on a budget.

We contacted The Red Balloon in Wellington, Florida, which is known for its upscale designer clothing offered to patrons at a reasonable price. The manager, Julie Pinello, and associates, Kristina Strassner and Dianne Pino, consented to putting together a few outfits to show the class how affordable it was to dress for success.

The trip proved very successful in helping the students to realize they can look professional without spending a fortune on clothing. They also learned dressing well is a personal impression that does make a difference in how others see your work values in regards to the company's image. Through the coursework and the trip to the consignment shop, students discovered the essentials of perfecting their professional image at work.

Dressing to Impress

A question often asked during an interview is, "what is the dress code?" The days when employees had to wear suits, dress shirts, ties, and high heels are gone, instead, we now have the business casual office attire. What exactly is business casual? Wikipedia defines it as, "generally dressing professional, looking relaxed yet neat and pulled together." And herein lies the confusion: just exactly how relaxed, and what does "pulled together" look like?

Forty-three percent of non-self-employed workers wear casual business attire, another nineteen percent wear uniforms and nine percent wear formal business attire. (Source: Wikipedia.org) This is good for those of us who must wear the business casual look to work. We have plenty to choose from and so many more ways to get the look just right—or wrong.

Not to fret, once you have started to work on a job the best way to gauge what to wear is to observe what your colleagues are wearing. Note those who are successful at work and have some positive influence. Are they wearing dress slacks to work or are they wearing khakis? It is important that you get the look right because it will help you to feel comfortable at work when doing your job. Knowing your choices can help you to put together a look that will complement your individual taste and body type.

Keep in mind that dressing appropriately at work helps you to perform successfully on the job. Following the dress code respects your employer's policy and speaks volumes to others on your personal work ethic.

Dressing Business Casual

For those times when you have to dress for an important business meeting, power dressing conveys a person who is authoritative, in control, and experienced. For women, dressing in darker suit and dress colors such as black and navy will portray a person who strong and able to compete in the business world. Men dress in dark suits, long-sleeved shirts, formal trousers, and neckties to portray this image.

When dressing in business casual or "smart" casual, a tailored jacket or longer cardigan will upgrade your look a level. Add a leather briefcase, tote or handbag and you have the essentials for a pulled-together look. However, it should be noted that in general, women wearing a pencil or a-line skirt will give a more professional image to this upgrade.

Pumps, peep-toed shoes, and low heels are preferable to flats or sandals when dressing for work. If a sandal is desired, a dressier or strappy design is acceptable. Gym shoes and sports-type wear should only be worn on "Friday" casual days at work. Flip-flops are beachwear and should never be worn to work.

I encourage my students to avoid bright colors as a solid wear, unless it is used as an accent to an ensemble. Jeans should only be worn on specified casual days and dressed up with a blouse or sweater. Again, a tailored jacket will pull the look together nicely. For the men, I suggest they wear a collared shirt or cotton polo with loafers on casual days. As with the women, if jeans are worn avoid t-shirts and opt for the polo shirt instead.

After having lost a bunch of weight, I am now trying to put together a working wardrobe that can stand up to a variety of tasks, both indoors and out. Some sort of style that can go from a casual business meeting, to climbing on rocks to snag a good photo for online purposes. I'm thinking jeans, nice top, sturdy shoes and pairing those with a jacket or sweater for indoor work. Now I just have to find the right jeans and get several pair.

Paul, it is a bit hard to admit our image is affected by the way we dress. I would love it if I could wear jeans and a t-shirt everywhere I went. It is so much more comfortable to work when you are totally relaxed. However, as you wrote, work settings are one place we need to dress for success -- I guess work dress codes help a business keep people focused on what is important.

The technical industry, especially the creative side like web design, and app creation, seem to dress on the scruffy side of casual, as if such an image somehow goes with the business model. When going to work, dressing well (which doesn't have to be overly formal for all occupations, of course), shows a bit of self-respect in my opinion. And when it comes to job interviews, well, we never get a second chance to make a first impression, and part of that first impression is all about the clothes we wear.

One of the main complaints you hear from UK employers is that young people turn up for job interviews in little more than t-shirts and jeans, thus giving the impression that they're not all that bothered what someone thinks about their attire.

And to finish on, it's always been said in the UK, that a woman can tell a lot about a man by the shoes he wears. Now whether there's anything in that or not, I don't know!

This is a fantastic Hub! I also taught business dress code when I worked in administration at a business college while I was going to college.

I had so much fun helping the students find appropriate attire. Of course, now things have changed. When I say wear a blouse, people look at me like "what's a blouse"! LOL

But, seriously, we have some really great consignment stores here. We live near some very luxurious towns on the coast. A lot of people that are very wealthy donate their items to local charity shops, so we have those to shop at as well. I bought a designer dress for $5 one time with the tags still on it.

We also have goodwill stores, but the selection isn't quite as good as the other local consignment stores.

In my workplace there is no dress code, and everyone just wears what they want. Over the years we've had folks wear everything from business attire to ripped jeans and hoodies. I totally agree with you that dressing professionally allows you to perform more successfully at work. I also believe in dressing to impress. I like the look of the dark suit with the navy blue or white shirt. I've worked for various law firms where our boss doesn't allow us to wear open toe shoes for safety purposes. I usually sport a pantsuit with low heel pumps since you are walking around in my case for the most part. There are many people who simply don't care and dress too casual to work. There was this one lady who always wore flip flops to work on casual Fridays. She was told by her boss and co-workers that she couldn't wear them and still wore them because she felt like it. I have struggled trying to figure out what to buy for interviews in the past (most of my jobs have a uniform or casual dress code, so under normal circumstances I haven't had to worry about dressier clothes). This is an awesome hub with lots of useful, practical advices. I used to work in a corporate world and it could be stressful to wake up every day and think of what to wear much more with the color combinations. I always make sure I look decent and respectable in the work environment.

Thank goodness, I've been on my uniform since switching job and hopefully will not have to undergo any interview process again. :) However, with or without uniform I believe it is important to wear our best everyday and that doesn't have to be expensive but smart and decent enough.

Congratulations on this well deserving accolades hub.
